The Sultana Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching students of all ages about the history and environment of the Chesapeake Bay.  The organization has a full-time staff of seven and a seasonal program staff (March – November) of up to 16.   The Sultana Education Foundation prides itself on providing a challenging, fun, and rewarding work environment where employees have an opportunity to grow and develop their professional skills.  Current job listings are posted below and opportunities are always available to volunteer.

Please note: Crew positions on the schooner SULTANA are generally posted here in November/December and June.   Seasonal paddling staff positions are generally posted in January.

PADDLING PROGRAM STAFF

Assistant Director of Paddling Programs (posted 11/21/18)

The Sultana Education Foundation (SEF) is seeking an Assistant Director of Paddling Programs who will serve as a co-leader for SEF’s canoe and kayak based educational programs.   This is a full-time, seasonal position running from April 22 – November 2, 2019.   Staff housing is provided by SEF for the duration of employment.

Working under the direction of the Sultana Education Foundation’s Director of Paddling Programs, the Assistant Paddling Director (APD) is responsible for co-leading canoe and kayak programs with local school groups during the late spring (May to mid-June) and early fall (September/October), and leading multiple day canoe and kayak trips in the summer months (mid-June to August) with the assistants of two additional Summer Paddling Staff.

ONBOARD THE SCHOONER SULTANA

2019 Deckhands on the Schooner SULTANA (posted 11/1/18)

SULTANA is seeking Deckhand/Educators for the 2019 season. Next season SULTANA will travel the Chesapeake Bay, visiting ports in Maryland and Virginia. Each year we work with over 4,500 students doing educational day sails as well as 3-8 day live aboard programs.

Employment for these positions begins in March and continues through November. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree and prior educational/sailing experience are preferred. Applicants must have strong communication skills and an active interest in education. Crewmembers often work 5-day weeks, receive competitive compensation and are provided with a private bunk onboard the ship as well as space in SULTANA’s new crew apartment in Chestertown, Maryland.

2019 Cook on the Schooner SULTANA (posted 11/1/18)

SULTANA is seeking a Cook for the 2019 season. Next season SULTANA will travel the Chesapeake Bay, visiting ports in Maryland and Virginia. Each year we work with over 4,500 students doing educational day sails as well as 3-8 day live aboard programs.

In addition to being an active member of the crew, the Cook is responsible for maintaining a clean and well-organized galley. During the spring and fall the Cook is only providing meals for the crew. During the summer the Cook provides meals to 16-20 people.

Employment for this position begins in March and continues through November. Shorter terms are also available. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree and prior educational/sailing experience are preferred. Applicants should have strong communication skills and an active interest in education. Crewmembers often work 5-day weeks, receive competitive compensation and are provided with a private bunk onboard the ship as well as space in SULTANA’s new crew apartment in Chestertown, MD
