The Sultana Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching students of all ages about the history and environment of the Chesapeake Bay.  The organization has a full-time staff of seven and a seasonal program staff (March – November) of up to 16.   The Sultana Education Foundation prides itself on providing a challenging, fun, and rewarding work environment where employees have an opportunity to grow and develop their professional skills.  Current job listings are posted below and opportunities are always available to volunteer.

Chief Mate

The schooner SULTANA is currently seeking a Chief Mate. Employment for this position begins in December or January.  SULTANA’s Chief Mate is a full time position eligible for health care and retirement benefits.

During the 2018 season, SULTANA will travel the full length of the Chesapeake Bay, visiting numerous ports in both Maryland and Virginia.  SULTANA will work with over 4,400 students and teachers operating many educational day sails as well as 3-8 day live-aboard programs..

A minimum USCG 50 ton Inland license is required. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree and prior educational/sailing experience are preferred. Applicants must have strong communication skills and an active interest in education. Crew members often work 5-day weeks, receive competitive compensation and are provided with a private bunk on board the schooner as well as space in SULTANA’s new crew apartment in downtown Chestertown, Maryland.

2018 Education Director

The schooner SULTANA is seeking an onboard Education Director for its 2018 sailing season. During the 2018 season, SULTANA will visit numerous ports in Maryland and Virginia and work with over 4,500 students and teachers doing educational day sails as well as 3-8 day live aboard programs.

In addition to being an active member of the crew, the Education Director is responsible for the daily implementation of our award winning educational program onboard the vessel.

Employment for this position begins in March and continues through November. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree and prior educational/sailing experience are preferred. Applicants must have strong communication skills and an active interest in education. Crew members work 5-day weeks, receive competitive compensation and are provided with a private bunk onboard the ship as well as space in SULTANA’s new crew apartment in downtown Chestertown, Maryland

2018 Cook

The schooner SULTANA is currently seeking a Cook for its 2018 season. During the 2018 season, SULTANA will travel the full length of the Chesapeake Bay, visiting numerous ports in both Maryland and Virginia. SULTANA will work with over 4,500 students and teachers doing educational day sails as well as 3-8 day live aboard programs.

In addition to being an active member of the crew, the Cook will be responsible for maintaining a clean and well-organized galley and for all provisioning. During the spring and fall the Cook is only providing meals for the crew, 5-7 people. During the summer the Cook will be providing three meals plus a snack to 16-20 people.
