The Sultana Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching students of all ages about the history and environment of the Chesapeake Bay.  The organization has a full-time staff of seven and a seasonal program staff (March – November) of up to 16.   The Sultana Education Foundation prides itself on providing a challenging, fun, and rewarding work environment where employees have an opportunity to grow and develop their professional skills.  Current job listings are posted below and opportunities are always available to volunteer.

Available Positions:

Second Captain/Mate (posted 10/18/18)

The Sultana Education Foundation is seeking a Second Captain/Mate for its 1768 replica schooner SULTANA. This is a full time position eligible for health care and retirement benefits. This position begins in December 2018 or January 2019.

The Second Captain will work closely with the Senior Captain in all aspects of SULTANA’s operation. This will include administrative, programmatic and maintenance duties.  During the Spring and Fall seasons, the captains will rotate time on and off.  During Maintenance periods both captains will be onboard.  During the Summer, when SULTANA operates on a 24-hour basis with students, the Second Captain will be the mate onboard with the Senior Captain.

Each year SULTANA travels the full length of the Chesapeake Bay, visiting ports in Maryland and Virginia. SULTANA annually works with over 4,000 students doing educational day sails as well as 5-8 day live aboard programs.

A minimum USCG 50-ton Inland with aux sail license is required.  Applicants must have strong communication skills with an active interest in education.  Prior command experience, a bachelor’s degree and prior experience with onboard educational programming is preferred.

2019 Education Director

SULTANA is seeking an onboard Education Director for the 2019 season. Next season SULTANA will travel the Chesapeake Bay, visiting ports in Maryland and Virginia. Each year we work with over 4,500 students doing educational day sails as well as 3-8 day live aboard programs.

In addition to being an active member of the crew, the Education Director is responsible for the daily implementation of our award winning educational program onboard the vessel.

Employment for this position begins in March and continues through November.  Applicants with a bachelor’s degree and prior educational/sailing experience are preferred. Applicants must have strong communication skills and an active interest in education. Crewmembers often work 5-day weeks, receive competitive compensation and are provided with a private bunk onboard the ship as well as space in SULTANA’s new crew apartment in Chestertown, MD.

2019 Cook

SULTANA is seeking a Cook for the 2019 season. Next season SULTANA will travel the Chesapeake Bay, visiting ports in Maryland and Virginia. Each year we work with over 4,500 students doing educational day sails as well as 3-8 day live aboard programs.

In addition to being an active member of the crew, the Cook is responsible for maintaining a clean and well-organized galley. During the spring and fall the Cook is only providing meals for the crew. During the summer the Cook provides meals to 16-20 people.

Employment for this position begins in March and continues through November. Shorter terms are also available. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree and prior educational/sailing experience are preferred. Applicants should have strong communication skills and an active interest in education. Crewmembers often work 5-day weeks, receive competitive compensation and are provided with a private bunk onboard the ship as well as space in SULTANA’s new crew apartment in Chestertown, MD

2018 Mate:

SULTANA is seeking a Mate for the 2019 season. Next season SULTANA will travel the Chesapeake Bay, visiting ports in Maryland and Virginia. Each year we work with over 4,500 students doing educational day sails as well as 3-8 day live aboard programs.

In addition to being an active member of the crew, the Mate is part of the education program.  The mate works closely with both Captains to implement all aspects of the ships operation and help organize the crew.

Employment for this position begins in March and continues through November. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree and prior educational/sailing experience are preferred. A valid USCG license with Aux sails is preferred but not required. Applicants must have strong communication skills and an active interest in education. Crewmembers often work 5-day weeks, receive competitive compensation and are provided with a private bunk onboard the ship as well as space in SULTANA’s new crew apartment in Chestertown, Maryland.
