Canoe Camp is SEF’s intro program for young paddlers seeking their first voyage on the Chesapeake Bay.  Each day parents drop campers off at Wilmer Park in Chestertown, where the group boards a 15 passenger van and travels to a different public landing on the Chester and Sassafras Rivers.  While on the water, participants learn basic paddling skills, explore creeks and marshes, fish with hook and line, pull seine nets, play games, and of course swim!

This is the perfect program for campers looking to perfect their paddling skills in kayaks.  Similar to Canoe Camp, but designed for slightly older children, parents drop campers off at Wilmer Park in Chestertown each morning.  After playing a few land-based games to get warmed up, participants board a 15 passenger van and travel to a different public landing on the Chester and Sassafras Rivers.  Once situated in kayaks, paddlers explore local waterways and protected marshes and creeks.  Participants also have plenty of time to sample marine life with seine nets, fish with a hook and line, beachcomb, and swim.

Three-day trips aboard the schooner SULTANA are a great introduction to overnight programs while sailing the Chesapeake and living on a traditionally rigged ship.  By day, participants learn the basics of tall ship sailing while navigating the protected waters of the Chester River.  Sailors also take a small tender (towed behind Sultana) to go ashore to swim, fish, beachcomb, and explore wetland habitats.  In the evenings, children camp ashore in tents on a private farm on Langford Creek where there is plenty of open space to play games in an open field, take nature hikes, and fish with a hook and line from the dock.  All three-day SULTANA trips start and end at the foot of Cannon Street in historic Chestertown, Maryland.

This experience begins with four days of camping at a private farm on the shores of the Nanticoke River, where participants explore the extensive marshes of the lower Delmarva Peninsula and Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.  During this time, the group also visits the University of Maryland’s Horn Point Oyster Laboratory for a guided tour.  On the fourth day, the expedition heads to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) in Wachapreague, VA, where paddlers spend the rest of the week housed in a dormitory.  At VIMS, participants work closely with the Institute’s scientists using their 25' Carolina Skiffs to explore the salt marshes, oyster bars, and wild sandy beaches of Virginia's barrier islands.  At VIMS’ state-of-the-art saltwater laboratory, participants also examine marine life under high powered microscopes and learn about ongoing research being conducted by graduate students.
