This experience begins with four days of camping at a private farm on the shores of the Nanticoke River, where participants explore the extensive marshes of the lower Delmarva Peninsula and Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. During this time, the group also visits the University of Maryland’s Horn Point Oyster Laboratory for a guided tour. On the fourth day, the expedition heads to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) in Wachapreague, VA, where paddlers spend the rest of the week housed in a dormitory. At VIMS, participants work closely with the Institute’s scientists using their 25′ Carolina Skiffs to explore the salt marshes, oyster bars, and wild sandy beaches of Virginia’s barrier islands. At VIMS’ state-of-the-art saltwater laboratory, participants also examine marine life under high powered microscopes and learn about ongoing research being conducted by graduate students.
