Onboard the Schooner Sultana
The Schooner SULTANA is seeking a Cook/Educator. SULTANA is a unique teaching platform through which students explore the history and ecology of the Chesapeake Bay. SULTANA’s home port is Chestertown, MD – a historic town on Maryland’s eastern shore. Employment for the position begins in February and ends in late-November. No prior sailing experience? That’s ok! The Sultana Education Foundation is seeking Cook/Educator for its 2020 season aboard the SCHOONER SULTANA. Next season SULTANA will travel the Chesapeake Bay, visiting ports in Maryland and Virginia. Crewmembers will work with over 4,500 students annually, varying in age, providing outdoor educational experiences about the history and ecology of the Chesapeake Bay region. Programs vary from day programs to overnight programs that can be 3-8 days in length.
In addition to being an active member of the crew, the Cook is responsible for maintaining a clean and well-organized galley. During the spring and fall the Cook is only providing meals for the crew. During the summer the Cook provides meals to 16-20 people.
Candidates must have strong communication skills, be action-oriented, work well with a team, have the ability to accept and integrate feedback from superiors, work well with students, and have an active interest in education. Candidates with a four-year degree are preferred.
Employment begins in February and continues through November. Salary is $70 a day and includes housing in Chestertown and onboard the ship, and meals during work hours.
