Deckhand Educator, Schooner SULTANA Alice holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of the Arts, and joins SEF with an impressive resume. Alexandra Miranda

Seasonal Paddling Staff Alexandra currently attends Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, majoring in Veterinary Medicine and Business. She graduated with honors from Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School, and has previously interned with SEF for their summer paddling programs. Alexandra is an avid horseback rider, the founder of her college’s Ski Club, and loves to unwind through kayaking and yoga.     

Walter Commins

Deckhand Educator, Schooner SULTANA Walter graduated from St. Mary’s College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Environmental Science. Employed previously by AmeriCorps as an Educator and Conservation Technician, Walter taught local children about environmental science, created an afterschool program for outdoor exploration and supervised various trail projects. Walter is eager to share his passion and knowledge of the Chesapeake Bay’s unique ecology, history and culture with students of all ages, and continue working in outdoor childhood education.  

Paige Dempsey

Deckhand Educator, Schooner SULTANA Paige is a graduate of Whitman College, and holds a degree in Environmental Humanities and Chemistry. During college, Paige worked as a Camp Division Director, where she designed outdoor programs and activities for children, and led the staff through orientation. Rae Handy

Deckhand Educator, Schooner SULTANA Rae’s love for sailing began almost five years ago at a sailing academy in Indiana, and has grown ever since. Holding a degree of science from Evergreen State College, Rae has extensive research experience in Environmental Science, Ecology, Entomology and Biology. Adding to her substantial volunteerism, Rae is a recent member of AmeriCorps, where she attained skills in ecological restoration projects, carpentry, trail building and maintenance. Ruthann Monsees

Mate, Schooner SULTANA Ruthann graduated from Stony Brook University with a bachelors in Coastal Environmental Studies and attended Coastal Carolina University for Coastal Marine and Wetland Studies. At Coastal Carolina, Ruthann worked as a research assistant, gaining experience in GIS mapping, land surveying, and team problem solving. SEF is proud to work with over 60 schools from five states and the District of Columbia, including schools from 15 counties in the state of Maryland.  A vast majority of SEF’s partner schools have participated in the Foundation’s programs for more than a decade and since its founding in 1997, more than a quarter million students have participated in an SEF program.   Partner School List  

Holt Education Center

SEF’s state-of-the art Holt Education Center hosts student programs focusing on biology, environmental science, geography, and related human history. Programs are tailored to fit specific school and grade-level goals, but can include organism dissection, animal physiology, geography, hydrology, estuary science, climate change, and Native American history. Programs at the Holt Center can easily be combined with other SEF programs to create a full-day or multi-day experience. FAQs Photo Album

Catherine Allen

Education Director, Schooner SULTANA Cat holds a degree in Anthropology from Appalachian State University, and joins SEF again as the ship’s Education Director with several years of sailing and teaching experience. She has worked at the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and Grays Harbor Historical Seaport as a Group Educator, Historic Interpreter and Deckhand onboard the recreated ships. Jackie Doerr

Chesapeake Conservation Corps Intern Hailing from Maryland’s Western Shore, Jackie joins SEF as a member of the Chesapeake Conservation Corps. Jackie is a graduate of Cornell University with a degree in Environmental Science. Prior to joining SEF, Jackie worked for the Environmental Defense Fund, tutored students in math, and was an outdoor educator and camp director at YMCA Camp Kresge.
