Gina Gaebl

Deckhand Educator, Schooner SULTANA Hailing from Maryland’s Western Shore, SEF is excited to have Gina join as SULTANA’s newest Crew. She is a recent graduate of St. Mary’s College with a degree in Environmental Studies and Philosophy. She was an active member of the Campus Farm, the Gardening Club and FUSE Feminist Club. Gina has valuable team management skills and experience working with children that make her a great fit onboard the Schooner SULTANA. 

Emily Sperling

Education Director, Schooner SULTANA A Maryland native with a degree in Environmental Science from Salisbury State, Emily has a handful of outdoor education, interpretive outreach, and teaching experience for organizations including Chesapeake Conservancy, Americorps, and the National Park Service. Emily is certified in wilderness first aid, Kayak and Canoe ACA, and was the president of her school’s Environmental Student Association. SEF is excited for her to join the team. 

Marcus Goldman

Assistant Paddling Director Marcus moved to Maryland’s Eastern Shore in 2015 from Hell’s Kitchen, NYC. Marcus holds a Bachelors in teaching from Indiana University and a Masters in Environmental Science from Slippery Rock University. He has worked at outdoor centers in the Catskill and Berkshire Mountains, as well as North Carolina and around Kent County, MD. In his spare time, Marcus enjoys training and competing in triathlons, hucking frisbees and exploring various rivers on the Chesapeake Bay. 

Faith Waaramaa

Camp Staff, Bay Discovery Camp Faith joins SEF for our Summer Programs as a rising senior at Washington College from Melrose, MA. She is currently pursuing a degree with a major in Environmental Science and minoring in Museum, Community, Field and Education Studies. She is very active in Greek life and community service, and is the current Panhellenic President at the school. Although busy juggling school and work, Faith likes to wind down with Yoga.

Forrest Richards

Senior Captain, Schooner SULTANA Forrest returns to SEF, serving as a deckhand in 2005; crew on SEF’s reenactment of John Smith’s voyage in 2008; and most recently as Mate in 2012. He has extensive experience on historic vessels including time the sloop CLEARWATER, the SPIRIT OF SOUTH CAROLINA, and BOWDOIN. Julia Klass

Deckhand Educator, Schooner SULTANA Julia is a recent graduate of Appalachian State University, and holds a degree in Biology and Environmental Science, a minor in Anthropology, and was a member of Beta Beta Beta Biology Honors Society. She joins Sultana after working as a tutor for Bethany Community School, a summer counselor with Green River Preserve, and in the hospitality industry at Half Mile Farm in her home state of North Carolina. Paige Dempsey

Deckhand Educator, Schooner SULTANA Paige is a graduate of Whitman College, and holds a degree in Environmental Humanities and Chemistry. During college, Paige worked as a Camp Division Director, where she designed outdoor programs and activities for children, and led the staff through orientation. After college, Paige grew as a sailor on board the SSV ROBERT C. Kate Dumhart

Chief Mate, Schooner SULTANA A Salisbury University graduate with a degree in Biology, Kate returns to the schooner SULTANA team where her love of sailing, history, ecology, and education for all ages come together in an outdoor setting.  Her previous employment includes the YMCA Camp Orkila and Ferry Beach Ecology School in environmental education, as an Interpreter for Historic St. Mary’s, and Mate aboard the Skipjack DEE OF St. MARY’S in Solomons. Courtney Forgan

Associate Paddling Trip Leader Courtney is currently a senior at Delaware State University studying kinesiology, and is a local addition to the SEF staff. Forgan was on the very first kayak overnight trip ever offered, and has worked as a staff member in SEF’s Paddling Programs for 4 years. When the weather is right, you can catch Courtney enjoying fishing and water sports on the Sassafras River, or hanging with her friends, family and pets.

Todd Mignosa

Assistant Director of Paddling Programs Todd began at SEF in 2018 as the Education Director on the schooner SULTANA. A graduate of Salisbury University with a degree in Environmental Studies, Todd has worked for many outdoor education organizations including Patuxent Research Refuge, YMCA Camp Orkila, and Path Finder Ranch, and is now the science and math teacher with the Kent School. Todd is a thrill-seeking outdoorsman, who finds comfort in good company and free spaces to appreciate the natural world.
