She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting and Business Administration from the University of Baltimore, and has extensive experience in finance and accounting, teaching, banking and office administration. Captain, Schooner SULTANA A former Chief Mate on the schooner SULTANA, Aaron holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut, and quickly jumped into the world of traditional sailing, working on multiple vessels including the schooners QUINNIPIACK, SULTANA, VIRGINIA, PRIDE OF BALTIMORE II, and Echo Hill Outdoor School’s historic Chesapeake Bay Workboats. Aaron holds a United States Coast Guard Master License for Vessels up to 100 tons on Inland Waters, as well as Auxiliary Sails and Commercial Towing endorsements.
President, Founder A co-founder of the organization, Drew McMullen has been President of the Sultana Education Foundation since 2001. A graduate of St. Paul’s School, Amherst College, and Johns Hopkins University, McMullen is a recognized leader in the field of maritime nonprofit management. Executive Financial Officer Kathy has been SEF’s Chief Financial Officer since shortly after its founding. She holds a degree in outdoor recreation and business from Frostburg State University, and a Juris Doctorate from the George Mason University School of Law. Following law school, McAllister decided to move to the Eastern Shore to raise her family, and prior to SEF worked for the Chesapeake Bank and Trust Company in Chestertown.
Lawrence Wetlands Preserve Manager John has a long history with SEF beginning with 2007’s Captain John Smith Four Hundred Project, a 121-day retracing of Captain John Smith’s 1608 Chesapeake expedition. John became the first person in the US to complete both the Appalachian Trail and paddle the full extent of Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. Holt Education Center Director From the Pacific Northwest with a degree in Marine Biology from Oregon State, Beth has almost a decade of environmental education, teaching, and research experience for organizations including Patuxent Research Refuge, Living Classrooms, and Kent School. Beth develops and manages many of the Holt Center’s programs and is a mentor of recent graduates through the Chesapeake Bay Trust’s Conservation Corps program.
Director of Paddling Programs Brad is a graduate of St. Andrew’s School and Bard College, where he earned a degree in Literature. With 15+ years of teaching, counseling, and coaching young adults Brad is a highly effective leader and engaging educator in his field. Vice President With a master’s in teaching Secondary History from the University of Virginia, Chris joined SEF in 2002 shortly after SULTANA’’s launch. His rich background in environmental education, development, and local knowledge allow him to create and implement award-winning educational programs across the organization. An outdoorsman and singer-songwriter, Chris’ devotion to the Eastern Shore is hard to find among many. Chris lives in Chestertown with his wife, two children, and lovable Labrador.
Director of Public Programs A graduate of Santa Clara University and UC Santa Cruz, Liza has worked for multiple high-profile corporations including Ariat International, McMullen Advertising, PRx, NextLink, Silicon Planet, and LonMark International. Wanting to travel less, she moved from California to the Eastern Shore of Maryland with her husband, became a small business owner, and joined Radcliffe Creek School as the Development Director. Liza and her husband live in Chestertown with their two children.
