The Sultana Education Foundation’s principal focus is providing field-based enrichment programs in History and Environmental Science for K-12 students in Maryland and throughout the Chesapeake Watershed. These programs are arranged with participating schools and are not available for individual enrollment. The Foundation works closely with our our partner schools and the Maryland State Department of Education to design and implement programs that stimulate classroom learning and increase student understanding of the Chesapeake Bay.
The Foundation’s Core School Programs Include:
Schooner SULTANA Trips: Suitable for grades 3-12, but targeted principally at grades 4-8, these trips are a unique opportunity to explore the history and environment of the Chesapeake Bay while sailing on an 18th century schooner.
Paddling Programs: Suitable for grades 3 and up, Sultana’s paddling programs employ mobile fleets of canoes and kayaks that allow students to explore waterways near their school.
Land-Based Programs: Sultana offers a variety of land-based programs including historic walking tours and wetlands exploration/restoration to students in grades 3-7. These programs are often combined with one of our on-the-water trips to create a comprehensive, day-long experience.
Classroom Programs: Offered as stand-alone programs or as preparation for a field experience, Sultana’s classroom based programs provide a basic introduction to the history and environment of the Chesapeake Bay.
